Granite sinks: cleaning and upkeep

Granite Worktop Restoration London

While you may not previously have considered granite as the ideal material for your kitchen sink, it has more benefits than you may have realised. This natural stone, for example, has anti-bacterial properties, making it hygienic for food prep and so on. Plus it’s a tough substance, looks great and is non-porous. At the same time, it comes in a number of different colours, plus granite is typically pretty low-maintenance.

But if you’re considering fitting (or already have) a kitchen in this natural material, you’ll want to keep it looking its best. Here are our top tips for cleaning and upkeep.

Daily cleaning

Daily upkeep keeps your sink in decent nick. Mop up any coloured liquids which could stain, including things like vegetable juices, right away. And for most daily cleaning, washing-up liquid, hot water and a soft cloth or sponge are all you’ll need. Don’t forget to rinse properly afterwards with clear water to prevent limescale build-up. And then dry with a clean microfibre cloth so that water marks don’t form.

Getting rid of limescale

Especially if you live in a hard-water area, you could need to deal with limescale deposits in kitchens and bathrooms. And this can be frustrating, but you don’t have to put up with these unsightly blemishes. Use a specialist cleaner, with a non-abrasive cleaning pad to loosen limescale so it’s easy to shift. Or you could try a mild, diluted vinegar solution comprising one part vinegar and three parts water. Again, after cleaning rinse off thoroughly and dry with a soft microfibre cloth. The result? A shiny sink that’s free from limescale.

Easy does it

While granite is robust and good at shrugging off scratches and resisting discolouration, avoid harsh chemicals which could dull the surface, and are also not great for the planet. Equally, don’t throw unused paint or household chemicals like pant stripper down your sink. This could damage the colour. Additionally, steer clear of wire wool and stringent scouring pads which could cause scratches which are hard to shift.

Finally, granite’s very durable nature means that if aluminium pots and pans leave a grey mark behind on your coloured stone, they can typically be removed fairly easily.
