Kitchen countertop colours may tend to stand the test of time pretty well, generally speaking. But fashions come and go nonetheless. Here’s a quick guide so that the heart of your home doesn’t start to feel outdated:
Heavy, dark hues
Countertops in deep, dark shades, especially heavy blacks and richly speckled browns, are beginning to seem a little old-fashioned at the moment. And that’s especially the case when they’re coupled with high-gloss finishes. The fact is they can feel rather too heavy, even if these hues were popular 20-odd years ago. The reality is that these surfaces give rooms a closed-in vibe, although this may seem less of an issue if you have plenty of natural light and large windows.
Cold greys
Earthier tones have grown in popularity in recent years, while cool, grey worktops have fallen out of favour. People these days feel more drawn to warmth and character. After all, grey can look disproportionately cold as a colour. Meanwhile, the more textured appearance of, say, some marble types or a terrazzo worktop have become more sought-after.
Full wood counters
The days of rustic farmhouse chic now seem a long time ago. The style offered a then-welcome contrast to the early 2000s’ minimalist and often somewhat stark look. And it seemed warm and welcoming. But wood requires a fair bit of upkeep, and can quickly look worn when used in heavy-duty cooking areas.
Black granite
This can show up the slightest mark or smudge, making it impractical for many modern-day households. Black granite may once have represented the ideal aspirational kitchen. But glossy surfaces in this shade, in particular, can make a kitchen feel oppressive.
Stark whites
A crisp white may have previously defined the fashion for minimalist kitchens. But these days, a worktop like this can feel somewhat starkly clinical. Plus the shade can feel cold, sterile, flat and unwelcoming. Again, every mark will show up on a bright white worktop.
