Summer holiday memories are fading in the rear-view mirror, and the weather has turned chillier. That means it’s time to consider how to protect your timber decking during the coolest months of year. Like anything else, wooden decking needs proper care and maintenance to stay looking its best and retain its structural integrity. And, clearly, that’s especially true during the autumn and winter months.
That way, when spring and summer roll around once more, you’ll have a smart-looking, functional addition to your property. It’s somewhere you can relax, entertain and generally enjoy al fresco living.
So here’s how to make sure your decking remains a cherished element of your home for months and years ahead.
A thorough clean is a good start
Before you do anything else, clean your decking thoroughly. Over the summer, the timber has no doubt gathered dirt and grime, along with, quite possibly, mould or mildew. Get rid of these before wet conditions set in, to avoid long-term damage.
This doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. Kick off with sweeping up superficial debris like twigs and leaves and so on, including anything which may have become trapped between the boards, since this can cause moisture retention. Next, wash the decking with a suitable cleaner, ideally an eco-friendly one designed for wood, and rinse thoroughly.
Inspect and repair
Check for indications of wear and tear and anything else you may need to sort out. That could include any loose boards which you may need to screw down, cracks and splinters, or any soft points in the timber which could indicate early stages of rot. (In the latter case, you’ll need to replace affected boards as quickly as possible.)
Appy your protective treatment
The application of a protective treatment is a key part of autumn and winter maintenance of your decking. Choose an oil, staining product or sealant to create an effective barrier against moisture, and help stop water from getting in and damaging your wood.
Apply evenly with a brush or roller across the decking’s whole surface. And be fussy about the end grains and any cut edges, which may be vulnerable to water penetration . Do this job on a dry day when no rain is expected, and allow the treatment to soak deeply into your wooden boards for maximum effectiveness.
Protection from the elements
If you can, think about covering your decking with a tarp or similar to minimise potential water damage. Equally, any gutters and downspouts nearby should be clean and working properly. You don’t want water pooling on your decking. If any ice or snow gets on the surface, clear it off right away – use a plastic shovel or broom. Other ideas include spreading sand over it, or using a de-icer.
Planning ahead
Keeping your decking in good condition now is also about preparing for the year ahead and keeping it in decent nick so that when spring comes around again, it’s there for you to enjoy once more.
So have a proactive, regular maintenance regime and clean and treat your decking twice a year, say once in the spring and then again in autumn. Finally, when the time comes and your timber starts to show signs of heavy wear and tear, be prepared to upgrade with new boards .
