What should I not use in marble cleaning?

Natural Stone Marble Cleaning Restoration London

In previous blogs, we’ve spent quite a lot of time discussing the best products to use in marble cleaning. But what about the things to avoid? Here, we take a look at the things you should NEVER use. After all, marble is a soft, porous stone which the wrong cleaning methods or harsh chemicals can damage easily.

So here’s what to steer clear of to keep this material in tip-top condition:

Anything acidic

More cleaners contain acid than you may have realised, even natural ones. The list includes vinegar and lemon juice, or indeed anything that’s citrus-based. And acids etch or mark the surface of the stone, harming its otherwise smooth finish. So they’re far too harsh for a surface as delicate as marble.

Abrasive scrubbers

Cleaning marble with rough scouring pads or scrubbers can be really harmful to this material. It can scratch and wear down the stone, and leave in its wake unsightly marks which you certainly won’t be able to shift easily. So, instead, opt for a soft or (preferably) microfibre cloth.

Bleach and ammonia

Both of these products are intensely alkaline. So while they are effective for many cleaning jobs, they’re too strong when it comes to marble. Not only can they discolour the stone and dull its natural sheen, but combining these two substances creates a toxic gas which could harm your health.

Harsh chemicals

Even in everyday household cleaners, there can be chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, which can stain or dull a natural stone like marble. So stick to pH-neutral products which have been especially designed to work on marble, or just use a simple mix of warm water and washing-up liquid for your regular marble cleaning regime.

Polishes and waxes not intended for marble

Waxes or polishes may seem like a good idea for buffing up your stone. But the reality is that you simply can’t use everything on marble. Some products may leave behind a sticky residue or, worse, damage the stone permanently. Therefore you always need to be sure that everything you use has been specifically formulated for marble.

Don’t overdo the water

Water may seem harmless enough. But, actually, excessive exposure to H20 can cause the stone to absorb the liquid. And this can result in discolouration over time. So don’t flood your stone, and always dry it quickly withkitchen towel after you’ve cleaned it.
