Over a quarter choose quartz: how it became UK’s top worktop material

Quartz Countertop

A survey from home renovation and design platform Houzz has found that UK homes are increasingly fitting quartz worktops.

The organisation’s 2018 Kitchen Trends Study quizzed nearly 5,000 British householders who are currently planning, or have recently completed, a kitchen refurb project. It found that, during these renovations, countertops are the most common major feature to be upgraded. And, for these upgrades, engineered quartz has become the most popular surface material. More than a quarter (28%) of homeowners choose this hardwearing material, while 18% plumped for granite, and a similar number selected laminate.

Equally, it seems quartz is particularly winning the hearts of those aged 35 to 54, rather than those over 55 or younger than 35. It’s clear why quartz is so sought-after. After all, it has all the benefits and visual appeal of natural stone, but without any of the potential snags.

You get both a return on your investment in your kitchen and a design statement. Not to mention the design versatility, range of colour choices and varied finish options, plus its numerous practical advantages. Clearly this new survey should be kept in perspective, and quartz has yet to completely conquer the market in the UK. At the moment, the stuff still accounts for under 10% of worktop sales.

But the report does show that both awareness and use of quartz and its benefits are on the rise in kitchens across the country, and this is only expected to grow among homeowners, architects and designers seeking a premium surface that’s tough, low-maintenance and hygienic.
