Marble sealant: why you need to seal the deal

Property owners often ask whether marble floors, countertops, bathroom vanity units and the like need to be sealed, and, if so, how often, and whether this will be effective in preventing stains.

The simple answer is “It depends.” Lighter coloured stone should be sealed more often than darker versions, and, as a general rule, marble sealing should take place every three to six months.

A marble sealant will help stop water and oil from penetrating the surface and grouting of your marble, while also making cleaning easier and more efficient.

However water spillages in particular still need to be mopped up promptly, and any acid spills can still damage your marble. So you always need to be careful. Equally, scratching from grit and dirt is also harmful, and a sealant won’t make marble more scratch resistant.

But it is important to preserve the appearance of this naturally beautiful porous material.

The kind of sealer you should use will depend on your stone’s finish and also how you maintain your marble.

A floor which has regular marble floor polishing, for example, needs an impregnating sealer to protect it, but this will not make any difference to the marble’s overall finish or look. This type of product is also good for honed marble if you want to retain a flat matt appearance.

But a surface sealer on a honed marble floor will alter its look and give it a light sheen. Meanwhile a gloss sealer will leave a shiny finish.

For an impregnating marble sealant, pour directly on to the marble’s surface, and spread evenly with a clean, white cloth. Once, it’s soaked in, sprinkle on extra sealer once it’s almost dry. Then rub and wipe away any sealer that’s still left.

Treat all your marble surface this way – repeating the process until the whole area has been covered.

You can ask your manufacturer or larger DIY store, or shop that specialises in marble countertops, for advice, and, of course, you should follow the instructions on your sealant’s packaging.

Alternatively, you may find you want to leave this important job to the skilled professionals, which is where we come in.
