Considerations when fitting marble in a bathroom

Few materials match marble’s effortless elegance, sophistication and sense of luxury. Admittedly, there are many increasingly effective imitations on today’s market, and some are better than others. But no surface can match the sheer beauty of the real thing, or indeed the feel of it. So it’s hardly surprising it’s so sought after.

And it’s understandable that you may wish to recreate the look of a boutique-style hotel in your own home, or your business. At the same time, your thoughts may well turn to the bathroom. Here’s a quick overview of using marble in one of your home’s most intimate and important spaces.

Are there any drawbacks to using marble in the bathroom?

There are certainly a number of things to take into account. This gorgeous natural stone is permeable, for example. And so you’ll need to reseal it fairly regularly so that it retains its water resistance. If you don’t, the surface simply absorbs liquid, resulting in unsightly stains.

Equally, polished marble is slippery when wet, so you may want to avoid using it on the bathroom floor, for obvious safety reasons. Consider going for a more slip-resistant honed version instead. This style is also better at hiding water marks. (However, light-reflecting polished marble could look great on your walls or on the tops of vanity units.)

You’ll also need to remember to mop up spillages immediately, especially anything containing chemicals or anything acidic. Stick to pH-neutral cleaning products, too. So while, for example, you may want to reach for the bleach, resist that temptation in a marble bathroom.

Colour and style considerations

  • In smaller, darker spaces, consider having a light-coloured stone with moderate veining. In larger rooms, you could get away with something darker with striking veining to add luxury, depth, drama and contrast.
  • Rather than covering the whole area in them, you could keep bolder shades for vanity or shower units or other focal or accent points such as backsplashes.
  • Use book-matched marble slabs on walls or shower surrounds to guarantee a strong impact. (These are two or more consecutive stone slabs cut from one quarry block and placed side by side so their veining and patterns mirror each other, thus imitating a book’s pages.)
  • Cooler marble hues go well with chrome or silver fixtures. Equally, you can pair warmer or neutral marbles with brass, gold, copper, or matte black hardware for a balanced appearance.
  • Finally, one option could be to have, say, a marble floor and tiles in another stone or a marble-effect material.
