The kitchen sink is the heart of the room that, in turn, is the heart of your home. So it’s worth choosing one that matches and enhances this space’s overall style and feel.
Clearly, you’ll need to think about size, taps and more. But one of the key decisions to make if you’re replacing your sink is the material it is fashioned from. As you’re no doubt already aware, there are a number of options, including porcelain, stainless steel and cast iron.
Yet marble sinks could be more of a realistic option than you may have realised. What’s more, it’s one of the world’s most coveted substances, and it’s well known for its durability and elegance.
Benefits of a marble sink
Marble always lends a real sense of quality to any area – your sink will be unique, eye-catching and versatile. This stone also shrugs off chips, scratches and stains more readily than you may appreciate, especially with regular resealing. So everyday maintenance shouldn’t be more complicated than a quick wipe-down with a cloth.
On the downside, you’ll have to consider the weight of this natural stone before installing it. If it’s going on top of something, for example, will it be able to bear the weight of the marble?
Equally, marble sinks don’t exactly come cheap. (Although many units may well be cheaper than you realised.) But for most converts, the benefits of a stylish marble sink far outweigh any potential niggles.
The wonderful simplicity, for example, means you can have a marble sink curved any way you choose, from really quite basic to something altogether more intricate. And if you go for pedestal sink in marble for your bathroom, it will give that space an elegance in a way no other material could.
Caring for your marble sink
However, your marble sink will need its fair share of TLC. Because it’s a porous stone, avoid abrasive or acidic cleaning agents. Likewise, steer clear of scrubbers which are coarse or scratchy.
Brush off any loose debris or dirt, and then wipe with a damp cloth and maybe a marble-specific cleaner. Seal your marble to ward off corrosion and minimise
staining. When you let a few drops of water fall on the surface, if it doesn’t bead, it’s time to reseal your stone.
Keep any products containing anything acidic or vinegar-based well away from the surface of your marble. Obviously, if you do have any spillages, as always, mop them up right away.
