Quartz makes a timeless, effortlessly elegant addition to just about any location. But, like all natural stone, it doesn’t come cheap. So it pays to be aware of any potential problems well in advance.
And even with the best will in the world, things can, of course, still go wrong from time to time. Here are some common issues that people sometimes experience with worktops made from this material.
Staining
Quartz is stain-resistant rather than stain-prone, but you still need to take reasonable care of your stone. If you have spilled something, don’t hang around to clean it up. Mop up liquids and food from your surface as soon as practically possible.
Heat damage
Do not expose your worktops to direct heat by placing hot pots and pans directly on them. Use anything you can – trivets, pan holders, cutting boards – to create a barrier between your countertop and heat. That extends, by the way, to a slow cooker.
Damage from the sun
You may not have realised that, much as we all love the sun, it can discolour quartz. So this is something else to be aware of. Understand that it’s probably a material best not used outdoors.
Caulk it over
Caulk, which fitters use to seal joints or seams against leakage, can be more visible in quartz countertops than you may have realised. Talk to your installer before they fit your worktop, to manage your expectations.
Not seamless
When you first look at your quartz installations, you may be surprised to see more seams than expected. Indeed, there could need to be multiple visible joints where the slabs of stone join together.
Again, take this into account in advance and discuss with your countertop specialist. This will avoid any unpleasant surprises. Find out where the seams are likely to be.
They miter got it wrong
At corners, two pieces of quartz could be placed together in what should be a miter. Where this is not perfect, there will be a noticeable gap between the slabs. Again, check this with your
fitter pre-installation. Ask them whether this is something you should expect to see.
