Why you should NEVER clean granite with vinegar

Granite Restoration Repair London

It’s not hard to see why granite is such a popular choice in modern homes. It’s a naturally durable, scratch and heat-resistant, long-lasting material, after all. What’s more, it’s generally a doddle to maintain and keep at its gloriously smart-looking best.

But low maintenance does not mean no maintenance. And, clearly, keeping visible dirt at bay is the best way to have your countertops appearing as they did the day they were fitted. However, with some cleaning agents, you could be making it hard or impossible to keep up the perfect sheen on your natural stone surfaces.

Why you should give vinegar a swerve

It’s readily available, strong enough to kill bacteria and has the power to dissolve the most stubborn grease, dirt and grime. It’s also inexpensive, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. So it’s often the go-to product to shift grubbiness from any surface.

But you should avoid using it, even in tiny quantities, on a material such as granite. Here, we explain why:

Acid and granite don’t mix!

Granite can look worse rather than better if you wipe it down with vinegar. And it’s the acid in this liquid that is to blame for its harmful effects. That’s because it wears away at the protective sealant which stops spills from getting into the stone and leaving permanent stains behind.

However, it’s not just difficult stains that can be problematic. In fact, vinegar has the ability to cause long-lasting damage to the structure of the stone itself. That’s particularly the case if you repeatedly use the stuff on granite. It can lead to etchings or marking which will forever stay in your stone.

Of course, it’s not just vinegar which can be problematic. Other acid-based products, including for example citric acid and lemon juice, should also be avoided. Even tiny amounts of acid can be harmful. So check the ingredients of any product carefully before buying it, whether you’re doing granite cleaning in your kitchen, bathroom or anywhere else.

For most daily granite cleaning, warm water and a mild household detergent will suffice.
