What are ultra-compact surfaces for kitchen worktops?

Worktops with ultra-compact surfaces (UCS) incorprorate a mix of glass, porcelain, natural minerals and quartz. These materials are subject to a pressure which is equivalent to thousands of tonnes, and heated in massive kilns at extremely high temperatures of more than 1,200°C.

The process of making UCS worktops also involves a high-tech procedure known as ‘sintering’ which mimics the earth’s natural pressure to bind materials into a solid slab. The end result is all but indestructible – and. crucially, it doesn’t use any resins.

What are the main benefits and features of this kind of countertop?

There are various reasons why these worktop surfaces have become so popular in modern kitchens across the UK – here are some of them:

  • Resistance to impact, scratching and heat: For this kind of surface, you can place hot pots and pans onto the surface without fear of burns or cracks. At the same time, the material produced shrugs off damage from heavy loads, daily wear and tear and knives.
  • Non-porous: A UCS doesn’t absorb liquid. So it wards off staining and is a doddle to clean.
  • No need to seal: Equally, you don’t need to seal this surface in the same way you do a natural stone such as granite or marble.
  • Resists UV rays: Even direct rays from the sun won’t fade the colour of your worktop. So this solution also works well for outdoor kitchens.
  • Sustainable: These worktops are made from 100% natural materials.

Are there any drawbacks to keep in mind?

There are few things to be aware of before you make your final decision. For a start, there’s the cost – UCS worktops, for example, are typically more expensive than basic quartz,. (Even though they’re competitively priced.) What’s more, if you do experience cracking or chipping, finding appropriate professional repair can be challenging.

Finally, installation does require specialist fitting, since these slabs are so heavy and rigid. Not only that, but cabinets and any other supporting structures need to be fully level and straight. Given its weight and very high density, you may find cracks appear if you don’t use expert installation.

Lastly, while UCS worktops are most definitely worthy of your consideration, natural stone is arguably always going to have an elegant appearance. And it can be hard for any other material to emulate this.
