But granite countertops do, of course, represent a significant investment. And, once you’ve decided to make it, you won’t want to replace your worktops anytime soon. So you may be wondering how long they will last if you make that investment yourself. Here, we aim to answer that question.
Granite worktop longevity: the lowdown
The good news is that granite is great at resisting both heat and scratches. And compared with similar natural materials, it has one of the longest life expectancies around. In fact, granite is actually one of the hardest materials in the world, second only to diamonds.
That means that, on average, your stone will remain in tip-top condition for as long as 25 years, so your investment will pay dividends in the long run. And while that may not be quite a lifetime, it’s certainly a very long time indeed. A granite worktop will really hold its integrity and can withstand quite a lot of wear and tear.
How to extend its life
Assuming they’re in good condition, high-quality kitchen worktops can add as much as 6% to the value of your home, if and when you decide to sell up.
Happily, there are a number of things you can do to extend the life of your stone, including all the usual sensible measures such as not placing scalding hot pans directly on its surface, mopping up spillages straight away and cleaning the granite regularly. Additionally, you can either seal the stone yourself, or get the professionals in to do that for you. You will need to reseal fairly regularly, since the sealant can wear off.
