Because wood is quite porous, not to mention rather delicate, you need specialist products to clean or polish it. With low-maintenance products such as MDF, you can just wipe them down. But, unfortunately, that’s not the case with top-notch wood.
However, if you have run out of proper wood polish, or are simply looking to save money on this product, here are a couple of possible home-made solutions.
Try the beer remedy!
Flat beer can make a surprisingly effective wood polisher. Just dab a little on to a soft, non-abrasive cloth and rub in to your wood. You should get a shiny, rejuvenated surface – just don’t go overboard with this stuff. Too much of it could make your surface a bit sticky or smelly.
Try this home-made alternative
Here’s another idea. Grab some vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil. Mix together equal parts distilled white vinegar and top-quality olive oil. Then add half the same amount of freshly squeezed lemon juice. The vinegar deodorises and disinfects, while the olive oil conditions the wood for added shine. Meanwhile, the lemon juice adds a pleasant scent, plus it’s great at shifting stains.
Apply with a spray bottle or a cloth. Rub in the direction of the grain until the wood is clean and you have the polish you want.
