Summer’s here, Clean your outside brickwork

Summertime and the living is easy – but it’s even easier (and a lot more pleasant) if your outdoor space is in tiptop condition as life shifts outdoors. Part of that means keeping all your external brickwork spotless all summer long. After all, the cooler months can take their toll on the outside of your home, from frost and rain to moss and weed growth.

Now, with the warmer, drier conditions and longer, lighter evenings, the time is right to make sure your exterior brickwork is looking its best.

Rain, for example, can leave water stains mainly made up of calcium carbonate, so an acid-based cleaner is needed to shift them. However, steer clear of muriatic acid, since this can bleach or stain many colours of brick and corrode aluminium window frames.

By the same token, abrasive cleaning isn’t right for brickwork, even if it’s done carefully, and it’s especially not the way to go about getting rid of graffiti or paint or cleaning historic bricks. That’s because brick can have many variations in terms of hardness, texture, porosity, absorbency and condition. If you’re getting rid of paint, you might heard a chemical cleaner could probably be your best bet. However depends on the type of bricks, chemicals may permanently damage your brickwork and instead we suggest to use hot steam pressure washer.

If you’re using a brush, be sure the bristles aren’t too harsh, and don’t scrub too vigorously. For very heavy soiling, an alkaline de-gresasant may also work.

Have you considered the benefits of pressure washing?

Pressure or jet washing removes more than just loosely sticking dirt, and it’s the only cleaning method that really works using water alone. Without that high pressure, water can’t break the siliceous bond with which dirt clings to the surface.

With so many things to take into account, including the risk of damaging the appearance of your exterior brickwork, while you can hire jet washing equipment, in many ways it’s a job best taken care of by the professionals.

At Royal Stone Care, we have extensive experience of brick cleaning and restoration and what it needs in different settings, so we can help devise the best solutions for your requirements with our pressure washing services.
