Cleaning Marble Fireplaces: a Guide

If you have a marble fireplace, you’ll probably already appreciate that cleaning it is not like cleaning any other sort of fireplace.

And, without the right maintenance, marble fireplaces can start to look lifeless and dull. It’s one of those tasks it’s easy to put off, especially if you’re not sure how to go about it. But, once you understand a few basics, it doesn’t have to difficult.

With the right approach, and a little understanding, your marble fireplace can continue looking its best for years to come.

Know your stone

Marble is highly porous, so will absorb any liquids which find themselves on the surface – this is probably the first thing to understand about this natural stone and marble cleaning do’s and don’ts.

Equally, use materials and tools specifically suited to marble cleaning, and nothing that’s going to be overly harsh or abrasive, so that you don’t damage the surface.

Cloths for example need to ideally be made from microfibre to remove superficial dirt and dust before you do anything else. Keep an eye out for coffee mug ring stains and sooty smudges in particular.

For more stubborn stains, dip a clean, soft cloth into distilled water and wipe gently around the fireplace, working particularly hard on the more heavily stained areas.

If some marks linger, step three would be to use a cleaning product especially designed for marble. Read the instruction carefully, and test any product on a small, discreet area of your marble fireplace first.

What not to use

We clean our homes with various all-purpose cleaners, and they seem to do the job well. But they may not work for marble fireplaces.

Specifically, avoid:

  • Baking soda – it’s abrasive and could spoil the finish of your fireplace.
  • White vinegar– the acid in it can damage the surface of your marble.
  • Limescale removers – again, these tend to be very acidic.
