Looking after your marble shower

Marble Bathroom Restoration Report London

Marble is, of course, synonymous with elegance and luxury. And it has endless possibilities in myriad different settings. What’s more, it’s pretty easy to keep in tip-top condition as long as you follow a few basic rules to avoid hard-to-remove or built-up stains. And while you may not have previously considered fitting a shower in this stone, it can make a beautiful, timeless addition to any bathroom, while adding value to your property. Remember, it worked for the Ancient Romans with their baths!

Pre-installation considerations

You’ll need to seal the floor and wall tiles a couple of times a year so that the marble retains its gorgeous qualities. Equally, be sure you have proper water drainage to avoid staining.

What’s more, you’ll also need to decide whether to go for tiles, mosaics or slabs of marble. Each will have its own pros and cons, depending on budget, your particular bathroom and personal taste. However, bear in mind that a solid piece of stone won’t have grout lines needing regular cleaning and sealing.

Cleaning your marble shower

Your main task here is to avoid a build-up of soap scum. And you can do this by using a squeegee to get both soap and water off the walls each time you have a shower. This stops soap from harming the finish of your marble.

At the same time, you could use a steam cleaner on your shower, too. This will shift any obstinate grime. But take care to dry or squeegee the area straight afterwards.

Don’t let water pool in your marble shower. This can wear out the sealant or stain your stone. So reduce scum at the same time by wiping dry after use.

You can also polish your shower with a chamois cloth, or use one of the various marble polishes on the market.

One thing to avoid is any general-purpose household cleaning products, since these can damage a marble surface because most of these items are alkaline. Meanwhile, anything acidic, for example a product containing lemon juice or vinegar, can corrode this stone.

So choose something pH-neutral. Hydrogen peroxide can work well on lighter marble. But if your stone is a little darker, a small quantity of acetone can get rid of potential staining safely. However, always be sure to rinse thoroughly after use.

Finally, if you want to create your own cleaning product, try mixing three tablespoons of rubbing alcohol with one of washing-up liquid, and a cup of water in a spray bottle. Then just spray on and wipe everything with a squeegee or soft cloth.

And whatever you use, make it your business to clean your marble shower every week.
