Different environmental factors, from moisture to heat, affect different types of wood in varied ways. So there’s a wide range of wood finishes on offer to provide protection from the elements and increase the timber’s longevity, while also making it look better. And you would use a new method, or a number of techniques, for each finish type.
Just bear in mind that you should coat some wooden items, such as those for children or which may come into contact with food, in a non-toxic coating.
Different finishing processes
The first step is to prepare the surface with glasspaper, sandpaper or steel wool. These items come in various grades – the more grit on the paper, the greater the abrasion and therefore the smoother the finish of the surface.
You can use one of the following finishing products once you have prepared your surface. As mentioned, this not only provides an additional layer of protection, it also improves the appearance of the wood.
Here are some of the more commonly found products on the market:
Wax
This gives your timber a protective coating. And it will also change the timber’s colour, while making it smoother.
Varnishes and staining products
These emphasise the grain of the wood, while also altering the appearance and colour of your timber. You would generally apply a number of layers of these products to create a good finish.
Paint
Paint obviously changes the colour of the item in question, so that its look becomes dramatically different. And when you build it up in layers, you also add further protection from the elements.
Polish
This is another option, and again you can apply this stuff to create a protective coating for your wood, whether you are working on a staircase, floor, piece of furniture or anything else.
