Cleaning grouting on marble tiles

Marble Countertop Restoration Repair London

Marble tiles add a huge dollop of elegance and luxury to any space.

But, as with any other material, you may find it hard to keep the grouting spick and span in your bathroom or kitchen if you have marble tiling. And unsightly flecks of dirt can cling to this sealant. Meanwhile, some fitters use sand in grouting for added strength, the grains of which can become very visible over time.

Equally, another issue is that grout joints can be set with a sponge, so that a little too much grouting is removed in the process. This means that the upper surface of the grouting ends up beneath the top surface of the tiles.

So you have to do what you can to preserve the sensitive surface of your marble tiles.

Using the right tools for the job

As when doing anything else, when you’re cleaning grouting, you need to be using the best tools for the job. Luckily with this task it’s easy enough and very low tech! You’ll need a brush with bristles stiff enough to gain traction on the grouting.

Get cleaning

Before you start to clean, tape the sides of the marble tiles. Next, take your stiff-bristle brush, and dip it in warm water. Add a small amount of baking soda to the bristles and scrub gently at the grouting between your marble tiles.

Once you’ve managed to shift the dirt, give the grouting a good rinse with warm water before cleaning it with a dry soft cloth.

Don’t forget to dust and clean marble tiles once a week to keep them looking their glorious best.

Top tips for marble tiles

1. If you have a tiled marble floor, use non-slip mats around high-traffic areas to stop the spread of dirt across your home.
2. Remember that lemon or vinegar-based cleaners could etch the surface of your marble.
3. If you place a silicone or plastic sheet over a tiled countertop, and use a trivet for hot pots and pans, you will also protect your stone.
