As we’ve said previously, when you’re looking to revamp your bathroom or kitchen, picking the tiles and stone is a key decision. That’s because these choices will dictate much of the overall look and feel of the room. Marble and granite have been the traditional favourites for decades. But, right now, there could be a usurper to this prominence – limestone.
This natural material has a soft matte look plus a timeless, elegant feel. However, it may not be ideal everywhere in your home or business, beautiful though it is. So here area a few pointers to bear in mind before you commit.
What is it?
Limestone is a sedimentary rock. And it comprises minerals plus compressed shells of minuscule aquatic beings. Its colours tend to be neutral and muted. So this stuff suits a variety of design styles. There can be some veining, but this is generally much less than granite or marble has. The polish is just enough to create a smooth surface, but without a shine. This means your surface feels luxurious but also understated.
Why is limestone so popular now?
There appears to be a growing appreciation of classic designs. And limestone fits in with that aesthetic effortlessly. Its design is universally appealing. Equally, limestone is a great long-term investment and can add significantly to the value of your property.
How can you introduce limestone into your home?
There are many ways of using this glorious natural stone. You may not realise, for example, that it makes a reliable flooring material. That’s because its matte finish means there’s less slipperiness when it’s wet. So limestone is a good choice in bathrooms. You can also use it outdoors in paving stones. Additionally, it’s naturally cool underfoot, so is good to have in pool areas.
However, be aware that the soft nature of this stone does make it more vulnerable to chipping in high-traffic areas.
Limestone worktops and backsplashes are, of course, another option. But because of its porous texture, it can stain or absorb liquids pretty easily without regular resealing to keep the stone in tip-top nick. (Although you should only need to do this once every few years.)
Finally, the main thing to understand is that, with the right care and maintenance, limestone can enhance the beauty of its surroundings for years if not decades to come.
