Like other natural stones, granite is a porous substance, so it’s relatively easy to damage it with the sorts of substances you use every day – unless it’s properly sealed. That’s because, over time, granite soaks up liquids.

That makes it very important that you seal and clean granite worktops (and do so properly) regularly. That way, your gorgeous stone will stay looking its glorious best for years to come.

Below, we list some common substances that can stain your worktops – some of them may surprise you:

Water

While this may sound odd or implausible, water can stain your stone surface if you allow it to sink in. Wipe up spills promptly, paying special attention to high-spillage areas such as those around sinks and kettles. Don’t leave wet cloths or sponges lying around on your granite, and always dry off with a soft cloth after cleaning your countertop.

Alcohol

This may sound easy but it’s easy to forget. Clean up any alcohol that’s been spilt immediately, especially spirits. Red wine glass marks can also leave very noticeable marks behind on granite worktops.

Hot drinks

Tea and coffee will stain mugs, and they can also stain your worktops. Keep kettles on a large mat and cups on coasters. And, on the subject of drinks, you also need to take care with fizzy and soft refreshments such as cola or orange juice.

Fresh fruit

This includes tomatoes, by the way, whether you classify them as fruit or not! Fruit is acidic and brightly coloured. Use fruit bowls and chopping boards.

Make-up

This one is probably more for the bathroom and countertops there than kitchen surfaces. But take care with cosmetics. They can be very damaging.

Hot pans

We know we’ve said this before, but we’ll say it again. High temperatures can crack or stain granite, even though this stone is heat-resistant. Don’t take any risks – use trivets.

Oils

Cooking oil is something else which can leave a permanent mark. And these stains can be stubborn
to shift. So because some foods also have oils, use mats or chopping boards to prepare food.

Bleach/ammomia

These common household cleaners can harm natural stone surfaces and discolour or mark granite.
