Using surgical spirit in granite cleaning and why you shouldn’t

Granite Countertop Restoration Repair London

You’re no doubt already aware of granite’s numerous benefits as a material and natural stone. (After all, we’ve discussed these in this blog several times.) In summary, the advantages include its natural elegance, durability and ease of maintenance. And granite is naturally resilient stuff which shrugs off heat, scratching and so on.

So it’s perfect for high-traffic areas of your home and gives any space a uniquely luxurious look. Meanwhile, although it’s porous, it’s less porous than some of the alternatives, and therefore less prone to staining. Essentially, its surface helps create a hygienic environment.

Whether you have a countertop or anything else made from this delightful natural stone, you’ll want to keep your granite looking its best. But, at the same time, you need to be careful what you use when it comes to cleaning your stone.

What exactly is surgical spirit?

Also sometimes called rubbing alcohol, surgical spirit has an alcohol content of 70% or higher, plus other additives such as castor oil and methyl salicylate. And it has many uses, including as a disinfectant for cleaning surfaces.

Why you shouldn’t use it on granite

Although surgical spirit can be highly effective in disinfecting many surfaces around your home, you shouldn’t apply it to granite. (Or indeed other natural stones such as marble and limestone.) That’s because granite is vulnerable to this liquid’s harsh qualities. And it could change the colour of your stone or erode any sealant you have applied. That can result in noticeable marks, stains and scratches on the surface.

What can I use instead?

A specialist granite cleaner won’t damage your worktops or other pieces, but will give them a sparkle. Plain water for a quick wipe down and daily cleaning, or a mild detergent or washing-up liquid, will work well, and are always safe to use. And, by the way, as well as avoiding surgical spirit, steer clear of anything abrasive or acid-based. Equally, disinfecting household wipes may work well elsewhere in the home, but are best avoided when it comes to granite.
