It’s that time of year again when we’re all pledging to lose weight, learn a new language or join a gym and actually go this time. But how about making some New Year’s resolutions for your marble, whether you’re lucky enough to have a floor, splashback, worktop or bathroom vanity unit in this gorgeous natural stone?

Here, we suggest some things to think about:

Relax and enjoy your marble

After all, your home should be somewhere you feel happy. And marble tends to go in intimate rooms such as the kitchen or bathroom, where you need to feel comfortable. Remember that this material has often lasted for centuries under constant use, and it’s more durable than you think.

So relax and enjoy its beauty and elegance. Equally, it’s all about striking the right balance between treating your marble like the finest porcelain and recklessly risking preventable damage.

Most problems can be fixed

In the majority of cases, a marble care professional can sort out issues with your stone. As we said, this stuff is harder to stain or chip than you may have realised. So don’t live in fear of damage.

But one thing to bear in mind is that tiles aren’t always easy to match. So order in a few spares when laying a stone marble floor so you have some extra ones if you need them.

Resolve to follow all the usual tips

We know we’ve mentioned all these things before, but they really do make a difference. Resolve this January to follow the usual care tips, including mopping up any spillages immediately. In particular, strongly coloured or highly acidic foods can leave marks in their wake. But if you spill something, don’t panic. And don’t try to make things better by using a strong cleaning agent which could potentially damage your surface. Products such as bleach can dull the marble’s surface or lead to pitting over time. Gentle cleaners such as a mild washing-up liquid are also better for the family, environment and your skin.

Finally, resolve to put pads underneath metal-footed chairs or anything heavy in metal which you place on your stone. Otherwise you could see chipping or scratching on your marble. So think in terms of sticky felt or foam pads which are widely available. (Trivets for hot pots and pans are also a good idea.)

Make these resolutions and you’ll go a long way towards keeping your marble in tip-top condition for many years to come.
