Marble is a natural material that can lend your home more than a touch of luxury. And there are more ways than you may have realised of incorporating this stunning stone into your home, from countertops to floors and bathrooms. What’s more, marble comes in a range of colours, from traditional black and white to edgier, more modern pinks and greens.

One thing you may not have considered for your home or commercial premises is a marble staircase. Yet this could be a showstopping focal point! And it may be more feasible than you thought. Like any natural stone installation, however, it will need regular maintenance so that it stays looking its splendid best. (The good news is that this certainly doesn’t need to be complicated.)

Whether you’re lucky enough to already have a marble staircase, or are planning to fit one, read on!

Tips for cleaning your marble staircase

A regular weekly clean of your staircase is the best way forward; more frequent cleaning may be needed if yours is a busy household, or if you have pets.

Sweep away loose debris with a soft brush first. The add a mild detergent to warm water in a bucket and combine. Don’t use harsh chemicals or bleach, as either of these could harm your stone. Mop the floor in circular motions with a clean mop, before rinsing with pure, cool water. Then dry with a soft cloth so that your marble doesn’t discolour. (This is important – don’t leave the stone to air-dry.)

Seal the deal

Sealing your stone is part of your marble maintenance. And it’s probably worth resealing your marble stairs every three to six months to protect the stone’s durability and colour.

Some final thoughts

As always with marble, mop up any spills immediately. If you want to restore duller areas, use a specialist marble polishing powder.

And, as ever, acid-based liquids including wine and fruit juice can be damaging to marble – mop up straight away but, better still, take care not to get any on the surface in the first place.
