Strong and resistant to moisture, marble can actively prolong the life of your bathroom and is relatively low-maintenance while also being pretty straightforward to clean. Equally, of course, its natural beauty and elegance will transform the overall look and feel of your room.
Why you need to be careful
However, because it’s a naturally porous material, gases and liquids can quite easily penetrate its surface.
Water can also leave permanent marks in its wake. So it’s especially important that you seal marble bathroom tiles. What’s more, you can do this yourself at home with very little in the way of specialist expertise or equipment.
How often should tiles be resealed?
As a general rule of thumb, we’d recommend resealing every three to six months, so that your natural stone stays looking its glorious best.
The water drop test
This is a very easy way to assess whether your marble needs to be sealed. Just drizzle a few water drop onto your tiles and leave for 10 or 15 minutes. If the stone has darkened during that time, resealing is indeed necessary.
Sealing your bathroom tiles
Undertake marble stain removal before sealing so that you don’t seal marks in. You’ll also need to clean and dry your bathroom tiles thoroughly. That’s because the stone needs to be as dry as possible if the sealant is to be effective.
Water-based sealers are among those likely to work best, but speak to your manufacturer if you have any doubts. Follow the instructions on the sealing product carefully.
But often you will just need to spread a thick, even layer of marble sealant on to your stones. Leave for 15 minutes, and then apply a second coat as you repeat the process.
