Can you pressure-wash limestone paving slabs?

Limestone Restoration Repair London

If you’re lucky enough to have a limestone patio or similar outdoor area, you’ll no doubt be delighted to have this gorgeous natural stone on your premises, and all the natural benefits it brings. Equally, you’ll be keen to keep it looking its glorious best.

So one thing you may be wondering is whether you can use pressure-washing to remove dirt and grime. After all, it’s a remarkably effective, powerful cleaning method. But the reality is that if you use this technique, it could result in damage to the surface of your stone.

So unless the staining is particularly severe, or there are scratches you’re unable to shift any other way, it’s probably not the cleaning method we’d recommend first for limestone paving. And that’s the case even though, admittedly, if you’ve sealed and treated your limestone, this kind of washing may be less harmful to its surface. Equally, you may be able to get away with pressure-washing a darker stone – especially at a low-pressure setting. (Because this will help prevent etching of the surface.)

So what’s the alternative?

The good news is that there is an alternative to pressure-washing limestone slabs. So try this first, before you even think about pressure-washing.

For organic stains, use a mixture of diluted non-acidic washing-up liquid and warm water. But if oil is involved, you may need to use a poultice. Test any products somewhere inconspicuous initially.

Sealing your limestone pavers

You would ideally seal your limestone every couple of years to help prevent staining and weathering of your natural stone. And this also protects against soap scum and calcium deposits. It also increases your stone’s longevity and lessens the risk of cracks forming.

Tackling algae and moss

When it’s damp, in particular, algae and moss can thrive, potentially making your surfaces unsightly and slippery. If you do use a pressure-washer, again operate it on a moderate setting. But you may also want to try a mix of warm water and baking soda plus some elbow grease! This will shift the stuff without the need for harsh chemicals. A specialist limestone cleaner can help if the problem persists.

Dealing with cracks and crevices

These can appear on your paving over time, as part of normal wear and tear. Fill in smaller cracks with a filling matching the stone’s colour. If the cracks are too big for that, you may need to replace individual pavers.

So if you deal with each issue using the right methods, your limestone paving will remain intact and clean. And it will hold its aesthetic appeal for years ahead. Think in terms of regular maintenance, including soft washing and sealing. What’s more, remember to deal with stains promptly.
