We’ve previously reported on a survey which found that nearly 60% (59%) of Brits admitted leaving at least four appliances on their worktops. Meanwhile, nearly half place fruit on their countertops, while a third use these surfaces as somewhere to store potatoes. And for more than a fifth (22%), these spaces are somewhere to keep sauces and condiments.
But if you’re lucky enough to own a natural stone counter, such as one in marble or granite, you’re not showcasing its beauty if you cover it in stuff.
What’s the solution
‘Appliance garages’ are one idea. These streamline storage to give your kitchen a more polished look.
In a nutshell, they’re a specialised cabinet or pantry space, often built into a kitchen, where you can store smaller appliances that you use daily. It means appliances such as coffee makers, toasters and so on stay behind closed doors, minimising clutter.
Here are some ideas and considerations which could work in your kitchen:
Turn a whole cabinet into an appliance garage
You could turn an entire cabinet into an appliance garage to store a number of devices in one place. For example, you could keep your microwave, coffee maker and toaster in one cupboard. Additionally, if you keep things like mugs close at hand, this could save time. Make sure heat and steam can escape safely, and have vents for the microwave.
Create a coffee station
Need your morning caffeine fix quickly? Create an appliance garage which stores coffee grounds, scoops and everything else you need. Have plenty of space in front of it where you can add your milk and sugar if you take it, and measure out beans or ground coffee.
Think of creative door ideas
The idea of appliance garages is that they store away devices, so think about how you will literally hide them behind closed doors Bifold, pull-up or roll-up (tambour) doors could work, as could doors which swing open and slide back into the cabinet. You may also want to combine, for example, stationary and pull-out shelves.
If you need more than one appliance garage, how about stacking them on top of each other? With so many creative options, the choice really is yours.
