Adhesive marks typically come from sticky tape, or perhaps because a child has decided to plant a sticker or label on your worktop or other precious marble surface. Not only can these blemishes gather dirt, making the texture uneven, it’s virtually impossible to remove them completely with a bit of scratching by hand. What’s more, adhesive residue is unsightly, as well as being sticky. And marks like these can darken, and therefore grow potentially more noticeable, over time.
Luckily, however, there are a few easy tricks for removing these stains – you just need a little knowhow.
Good old-fashioned soap and water
Sometimes, the simplest methods are the best. So it may be that all you need is a sponge dipped in warm soapy water. And you’ll just need to rub the stain until it loosens, and eventually comes away completely. You’ll also need to rinse before drying with a clean, soft and dry cloth.
Try these other ideas
You might be surprised at just how many things can simply dissolve sticky residue without causing any lasting harm to you stone.
Soak a ball of cotton wool in surgical or white spirit and rub the stain until you get rid of it. And then wash the spot with soapy water to remove all traces of chemicals before patting dry.
Other things you can try include cornflour and talcum powder. Place on the affected area and then dry with a cloth until you’ve shifted the stain. For stubborn marks, you can also try vegetable oil. Allow it to sit on the mark for a few minutes before scraping off with a spatula or a knife’s dull edge. Clean afterwards with soapy water.
Sticky stain removal with WD-40
Another idea you can try is WD-40 lubricant, sprayed on and then removed with a soft, dry cloth. And, again, wash, rinse and dry afterwards.
Which solutions should be avoided?
Acidic, abrasive cleaners are the enemy. If you’re not sure, test on an unobtrusive area first to protect your investment in your beautiful natural stone. Additionally, steer clear of lemon juice and vinegar as these are acidic. If you are using baking soda, do so carefully.
