It seems that black kitchen worktops are having something of a moment as they make a sensational comeback. Here are our tips for rocking this dramatic shade (and others) in your home.
Back to black
According to influential interior design website Living Etc., the days of dazzling white kitchens could be numbered. And having dark kitchen countertops is the way to go. But committing to this move to the dark side can feel like quite a big and bold step, if a rewarding one. And there’s quite a lot to think about, from lighting to materials. Yet, as we show, there can be a number of benefits to going back to black.
Why go dark?
In modern kitchens, dark worktops lend more than a hint of understated luxury. What’s more, they’re incredibly versatile. And they work well with ever-popular grey finishes, natural wood or even contrasting white kitchen cabinets for a monochrome appearance. You can create a look that’s both elegant and subtle.
Tips for the leap into the darkness
Get the lighting right
Think about the natural light in the space. Sunlight bounces off dark surfaces, particularly if it has a glossy finish. Equally, choose a deep grey or blue and natural illumination to complement those pigments to perfection.
Clearly you’ll also need to think about artificial light. Otherwise, the space could start to feel a little oppressive.
Choose a hardwearing material
Countertops need ideally to be made from hardwearing materials, since kitchens see a lot of potential damage from sharp knives, spillages and heat. Damage can show up on dark surfaces in particular. So durable natural stone makes an excellent choice, whether you go for marble, limestone or granite units.
Dark kitchens don’t have to be austere
Contrary to what you may have thought, dark worktops don’t need to be sombre. Dark colours can be warm as well as bold and dramatic. There are many nuances involved, whether the look you want, whether that’s classic or modern, industrial, daring or elegant.
From the start, think of the finish
Don’t forget to consider the finish of your worktops. While glossy styles have always been popular, matte has become increasingly sought-after, including features such as matte taps.
Finally, consider how your countertops will fit in with your existing décor. And, if you’re updating these elements, think of pairing with, for example, natural woods or metallic accents including brass, steel or copper taps and handles. All of these look stunning alongside darker surfaces.
