Top tips for marble floor cleaning

If you have a marble floor, you already have one of the most beautiful and elegant of all flooring options in your property.

While it may cost a little more initially, marble is highly durable, meaning it lasts a lot longer than other, cheaper kinds of flooring. In fact, this natural stone can last up to between two and five times longer than the alternatives.

Marble is also naturally resistant to bacteria and has hypoallergenic qualities. Equally, it resists moisture, so mopping up after any spillages is a straightforward business.

If you’ve gone for this practical, attractive option for your flooring, you’ll want to keep it in the best condition for years on end.

Here are a few pointers to help on marble floor cleaning:

  • Use a dry, clean dust mop-type sweeper that hasn’t been treated with any cleaning or polishing sprays to clear the superficial dirt left behind from foot traffic, or just airborne dust. Any grit remaining on a marble surface etches it so that your floor will lose its distinctive shine.
  • Man-made cleaners designed for ceramic tiles are no good on marble. Your stone could be left dulled, stained or otherwise damaged.
  • The calcium carbonate in marble means that even something mildly acidic like vinegar and water can, over time, damage the surface of your marble floor. Scouring powders, creams and alkaline products are also off-limits since they often have small, abrasive particles which could leave scratch marks on the floor. Only use cleaners with a neutral pH and those which are acid free.
  • If you don’t have a neutral pH cleaner to hand, mop your marble floor with warm water. Change the water often to avoid streaking, and dry with a clean, soft cloth instead of allowing it to air dry. This will help to retain the marble’s shine.
  • Depending on how heavy the traffic over your floor is, consider adding a sealant for untreated marble. This can extend your floor’s life, and enhance its appearance, over time.
  • Don’t use any kind of vacuum cleaner on your marble floor.

Finally, have rugs by the entryway to the room, to gather the dirt and other abrasive materials which could otherwise end up scratching your floor. Be careful there’s no chemical reaction, though, from the rug backing which could discolour the marble and even cause scratching.

While routine maintenance and cleaning shouldn’t be problematic, if your floor has a build-up of etching or a waxy coating, you may need to have the whole surface rebuffed with professional marble floor cleaning, polishing and marble restoration services.
