Marble cleaning and baking soda: do they go together?

Marble Restoration Repair Cleaning Chip Repair London

People often ask us about whether they can clean marble with baking soda – so we thought we’d provide a brief overview here.

The short answer is that you can use baking soda on most types of marbles. What’s more, there are various benefits to doing so, as we explain below. However, you do need to be careful, and ensure that the stuff has limited contact with your stone’s surface. Additionally, it’s probably a good idea to not clean marble with baking soda too frequently. In between times, use a pH-neutral specialist cleaning product.

It’s also worth taking the time to test baking soda on a small, inconspicuous patch of stone before using it more widely across your marble.

Benefits to using baking soda on marble

These include baking soda being able to deodorise, sanitise and remove stains from a marble surface. Equally, it can help your marble to shine again.

How to use baking soda when cleaning marble

First of all, sprinkle a small amount of this product on to the area of your marble that you wish to clean. Next, rub the baking soda around the stone using a soft cloth, taking care not to scrub at the surface.

The next step is to rinse the area, before drying it thoroughly, again using a soft cloth.
Work quickly. Baking soda is alkaline, meaning the water will neutralise the area again. So you have to wipe down the surface thoroughly.

You can use baking soda if your marble is etched, i.e. if it looks cloudy or slightly discoloured. (Again, do so carefully, and don’t leave anything behind on the surface.)
